Euro 2016 Portugal Crowned Champions After Stunning France Triumph

EURO 2016: Portugal crowned champions after stunning France triumph

UEFA Euro glory at last for Seleção das Quinas

Ronaldo injury blow but Eder on hand to write his name into history

Portugal overcame the early loss of captain Cristiano Ronaldo to beat hosts France in the Euro 2016 final and win their first major tournament.

Ronaldo was forced off in tears after just 25 minutes with a knee injury, but his team-mates rallied in his absence to claim a famous victory at the Stade de France.

Eder scored the winning goal in extra-time, firing home a low shot from 25 yards out after being played in by Renato Sanches.

The victory is Portugal's first major tournament win, and it comes 12 years after they lost to Greece in the final of Euro 2004.

France, who were looking to win their third European Championship, will be left to rue a number of missed chances.

Antoine Griezmann hit the post in the first half, while Olivier Giroud missed a glorious opportunity to win the game in the second half.

But it was Portugal who held on to claim a famous victory, and they will now go on to represent Europe at the 2017 Confederations Cup in Russia.
